Subway Art Frames

So I had JUST said that I liked this Subway Art from Life, Crafts and whatever, and couldn't wait to make it! I had some empty frames in the girls room that just needed to be filled and I thought these would be so fun!
**sorry for editing on these pictures, but I didn't want details of my baby's on here!

The frames were a gift from my sweet sister-in-law when my Dolly was born. I had originally filled them with pictures of dolly's hands, feet, and big yawn, but when sharing a room that didn't seem appropriate anymore!

**My current favorite sister picture :)

An unphotographed tutorial of the frames: My SIL bought plain unfinished frames, she started by painting them white. Next she painted on green and pink polka dots. She felt that was still a little plain, so using rub-ons she added some words to them to give it just that simple touch!  Then she stapled ribbon to the back and they were read to be hung on the pegs! Easy, right!?!

Using Adobe I created the Subway Art in a 4x6 size and printed it on photo paper.

**As mentioned before, details including names are changed!

I tried to keep them similar in style to blend in, yet a little different to make them unique for each girl.

Projects I love

Let's add a few more to my to do list!! I'm sure going to keep busy :)

First, LOVE this subway art of the baby's birth from Life, Crafts and whatever, I want one for my new Baby now!

Sarahndipity made these adorable knit flowers. It makes me really wish I knew how to knit. How cute would these be in hair or attached to the belt of a little dress? LOVE the colors too, aren't they great?

Because I seem to have an obsession with little girl skirts and dresses lately, this one caught my eye at Delilah's Momma. Is it summer yet so I can dress up my little girls?

2011

Disclaimer: I did not come up with this myself, but found it on Moda Lissa

There are four unusual dates this year. 1-1-11, 1-11-11,11-1-11, and 11-11-11. Now take the last two digits of your birth year and add to the age you will be this year....

What is your answer? My baby was born last year, meaning she'll be 1 this year...so 10 + 1 = 11.

Strange, now you try! It worked for my whole family that we were all ones!

Wordless Wednesday

So, I'm a day late!!  Where does the time go? If I'd had a typical maternity leave I would have been back at work a few weeks now, and strangely, I don't miss it! I was worried that it would be long, monotonous days at home, especially during the winter when it's too cold to go outside, but the days are going by so fast and the kids and I aren't getting all the stuff done we want! Life is good :)

oops, guess this wasn't "wordless" wednesday, er, Thursday!

Hoo are You?

This came from the blog Night Owl Crafting

HOOOOOOOOO ARE YOU?
HOOOO HOOOO!
Helllloooo fellow HOOOOOTS! Welcome to another week of
HOO ARE YOU?

NightOwlCrafting

Here are this week's questions!

1. Do you wear glasses or contacts, if so for how long?
I started wearing glasses in 5th grade, contacts in 6th, and got laser eye surgery 3 years ago. LOVE it!
2. What was your favorite board game as a kid?
Clue, although we didn't have it, I played it at my Grandma's :)3. What is a word that you use all the time?
?? Not sure, but when typing I use a smiley face a lot! :)
4. What is your favorite day of the week?
Friday, it means the weekend is coming
5. Did you graduate high school from the town you grew up in?
My parents moved into my childhood home when my mom was pregnant with me, and they didn't move out until I was 28!  My fun of moving as a child was switching bedrooms :)  I made up for that lack of moving after high school, different housing every year of college, and one the year after, then since married I have lived in 3 homes with thoughts of moving again on our minds!

Have fun and feel free to comment with your answers :)

Handmade Chenille Baby Quilt

A while back I came across this gorgeous chenille blanket from Aesthetic Nest. I immediately put it in my "bucket list" for sewing projects! I made my version, and I LOVE it!
My flannel backing contains three layers of flannel, ivory, brown, and light pink. Sewing the straight lines was rather tedious and time consuming. I started to "stretch" out the distance in my lines. I later learned that wasn't so good. The chenille isn't as tight as I would have liked, but it is still gorgeous!

I bound it in a soft ivory satin.

The chenille looks as though it could use a few more washes to make it shrivel up some more! But as you can see, it isn't quite as tight as it could be, a lesson for next time!

many, many lines

A beautiful quilt for a beautiful newborn :)

Cookies 'n Cream Cupcakes

Yum, Yum...this past week was my Dolly's 1/2 birthday, and she requested cupcakes. After rummaging through the cupboards, I realized I didn't have a box mix on hand, and would have to try cupcakes from scratch, yikes! Sounded scary to me, but was actually just as easy as a box!

my son walked in half-way through, and asked, "Where's the box mom?"  I replied, "There isn't one." Then he said, "then how did you make the cupcakes?" HA!  Shows how my cookies has been thus far :) Hopefully being at home now it'll improve!!

I found a recipe in my fun kiddy cookbook: "3 Books in 1: Silly Snacks, Classroom Treats, and Cookie Dough Fun"

Cookies & Cream Cupcakes
2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1-2/3 c sugar
1 c milk
1/2 c (1 stick) butter, softened
2 tsp vanilla
3 egg whites
1 c crushed chocolate sandwich cookies (about 10 cookies) - this was enough for me for the garnish, too
1 container vanilla frosting (I used cream cheese - my favorite!)

1. Preheat oven to 350, line 24 regular muffin cups with paper baking cups
2. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together in large bowl. Stir in sugar. Add milk, butter and vanilla; beat with electric mixer at low speed 30 seconds. Beat at medium speed 2 minutes. Add egg whites; beat 2 minutes. Stir in 1 cup crushed cookies.
3. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups. Bake 20-25 minutes or until toothpicks inserted into centers coue out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks 10 minutes. Remove to racks; cool completely
4. Frost cupcakes; garnish with additional crushed cookies

We decided to try making 12 big and 24 mini-muffins. I took the mini muffins out at 15 minutes, but it was still a touch too long. So I cut off the bottom part of the cupcake, as the top was still good. We then made sandwiches with these!

I let the kids decorate most of the cupcakes, and besides a mess, here is the "pretty" cupcakes I ended up with!
and of course I forgot to take a picture of the 1/2 birthday girl, who was mad at me because a 1/2 birthday does not equal presents and a party!

Fabric Labels

A while back I posted about these fabric labels from Gabriel's Good Tidings. I tried my hand at them this week
Figuring out spacing was probably the hardest part, and finding in my print options where to mirror the image!!

I had a hard time getting them to "feel" nice. The ribbon got stiff, and some of the iron off stuff seemed to stay on leaving it rough. I'll have to play around with washing them, etc to see if they get better.

Twirly Ballerina Skirt

LOVE this twirly Ballerina skirt!

I started by finding this skirt tutorial on The Polka Dot Chair. Love her!
Next I raided my stash to find enough fabric for the skirt :)
I LOVE the drop waist!
--I made the mistake of missing one side seam. I got to the end and wasn't sure how to neatly connect them, oops!
--I did feel that there was a little too much fabric in the skirt. I was told to measure the waist, then needed to strips that were 2X the waist length. My daughters waist is 19", so that meant a total of 76" around that would be gathered. This was very heavy and a bit too bulky, so I cut out 9". It turned out great, but still pretty full and heavy, I think I would have been ok taking out another 10", so having the skirt be 3X the waist measurement.
I love the skirt, it was easy to make and I'd love to make more, but She won't wear it, because I made it...I didn't know the "teenage" attitude like that started at 3!!

play-doh

Today I made play-doh for preschool as this month was my month!
It was an easy recipe, and I made a double batch.  Single batch is as follows:
1 c flour
1/2 c salt
2 tsp cream of tarter
1 T oil
1 c cold water
food coloring

Stir over medium heat until consistency of mashed potatoes. Will get clumpy in the process, in the end will pull away from sides of pan. Remove from heat and cool. Knead a few times. Store in a ziploc or other airtight container for several months!

Mixing away - light blue was the color of the month!

my ball of play-doh!

Diaper Bag

My latest sewing project was a diaper bag for Baby #3! My nice diaper bag has Buddy's name on it, I used it for Dolly, but felt I wanted a new one this time :) After scouring the net for a diaper bag tutorial, I found this one that looked perfect at Sew 4 Home. I always struggle with bags falling off my shoulder, so I loved that this one had long straps so it could go across your body like a messenger bag! My only critique would be that the bag is a little deep, I maybe would have made it 4" more shallow, but it's great for holding lots of goodies!

We'll see how it holds up! It was recommended to use Polyurethane laminate inside for water proof, but I couldn't find any, so I used cotton - which is prettier anyway :)

Below is the pockets inside, it'll look better when they are full :)
My pictures don't do the bag justice.

Projects I love

And below are a few of this weeks items that are being added to my ever growing "To Do" List!!

I'm in love with this Perfect Little Party Dress from Nug Buns. The big bow is my favorite part! It can be tied in front or back.

How cute are these little snowmen? They came from Keeping it Simple and are adorable! I love that they can be kept up all winter!

Check out this adorable calendar made out of metal from Crafty Girls

I love this "feel" book for little ones, how cute! It is made by 4 leaf Clever. This picture is of my favorite page of hers, although it isn't done yet, I love the ribbons on the lions face!!

Feel free to grab a button on the side!
